There are two kinds of acne scars:
1- Keloids- these are scars that are caused by the increase in tissue formation. They are also called hypertrophic scars, hypertrophy meaning an enlargement or an overgrowth. Excess deposition of the protein collagen in the tissue causes hypertrophic scar or keloid. When there is an injury in the skin, the immediate response of the body is to produce extra collagen and deposit it in the sight of the injury. The protein then settles as a mass of fibrous tissue, resulting in a firm, smooth and irregularly shaped masses of skin tissue.
The size of a keloid is generally a very few millimeters but in a few cases, it can grow up to a centimeter. This has genetic specifications and is passed on to the progeny as inheritance. People who have relatives with these scars are more susceptible to have them. This type of scar can persist from over a span of few years to the entire life time of a person. In some fortunate cases, its size reduces.
Life is not simple for people with such abnormal marks, especially on their face. They have to constantly face the unwanted glances of the people around them. There are cases when women have been rejected in marriage because of a familial scar that runs in her blood.
