Acne conglobata is a chronic and severe form of acne vulgaris. Its characteristic features are as follows
Deep abscesses, inflammation of the skin, scarring, widespread comedones, all over the body and thus severe damage to the skin.
inflammatory nodules form around multiple comedones, In acne conglobata,gradually increasing in size until they break down and discharge pus. Keloid type scars are formed when these deep nodules become ulcerated. Burrowing abscesses commonly result in deep, irregular scarring.
Acne conglobata may be preceded by acne cysts, papules or pustules that do not heal, but instead rapidly deteriorate. Occasionally, acne conglobata flares up in acne that had been dormant for many years.
In the beginning, there is formation of cysts, nodules and pustules, that persist and finally take the frm of the mammoth acne conglobata. Sometimes the conglobata breaks out in the case where acne has remained dormant for sometime.
Males are more likely than females to have acne conglobata; the age of onset is usually between 18 and 30 years. Though, not understanding of the matter has been achieved by far.
Treatment. Isotretinoin, the most helpful drug in treatment of acne vulgaris is useful in this case too.. some antiboiotics may be required for the pain.
