“There is no single disease which causes more psychic trauma, more maladjustment between parents and children, more general insecurity and feelings of inferiority and greater sums of psychic suffering than does acne vulgaris.” –Sulzberger & Zaldems, 1948
It is widely believed that a disease as minor, as in not life threatening, as acne can cause most severe form of trauma than a lot of other psychological trauma. Psychiatrists all over the world have been unable to find any empirical reason why so many stigmas are attached to this disease which happens to everybody with varying degrees. Acne, in most cases wears off on its own and apart from aesthetic aspect, has no serious ill effect on the health of any person.
Even after knowing all these general facts, acne does have a major impact on the lifestyle of the person affected from this. The person prefers to stay withdrawn, and turn to introverts. The degree of self confidence and self esteem takes a plunge. Apart from general frustration, embarrassment and anger, there are cases where people have suffered from depression due to this. The most remarkable observation is that people with acne are more readily fired from their jobs. All the effects are related to each other and leads to the overall deterioration in the person’s life, discouraging him from following their dreams. Such are the social hazards of acne.
