Acne vulgaris is a common skin problem which is also termed as acne. It is caused by changes in pilosebaceous units and skin structures. Skin structures that have denser population of sebaceous glands are prone to this kind of skin condition. More than 85% of teenagers get affected by acne problems which may continue in adulthood if not treated.

The root cause of these kinds of skin condition is hormonal changes. The follicular glands get larger and make more sebum when the male androgens increase. Similarly menstrual cycle and puberty in girls causes acne vulgaris.

Major Treatments

One must understand that every skin type is different and each of the treatment will take its own course and time to cure the problem. It may take few weeks for some people and more than six months for others. It is therefore advised to visit the dermatologist before taking any medication.

  • Tropical antibiotics – There are antibiotics that can be applied to the affected skin area. In this method the bacteria gets killed by the ointment.
  • Oral antibiotics – You may take the antibiotics orally and it will do the same function of killing the bacteria present in blocked follicles.
  • Tropical bactericidals –Benzoyl peroxide being a strong oxidizer works effectively on the acne.
  • Hormonal treatments – It is a method where the dermatologist may administer injection. Oral contraceptives increase the sex hormone binding globulin which results in the decrease of testosterone levels.
  • Oral and Tropical Retinoids – In this treatment vitamin A derivatives are given to the patients suffering from acne.
  • Surgical care – In this treatment phototherapy is performed using red or blue light. There are injections which extracts the comedones from the acne.
